Matthew Dunbar, “Reflections”

In the creation of an Artist Book, I came up with the idea of a reflective journal-like collection of poems that ultimately serves as a book. My liking of poetry stems from the qualitative endeavors of great authors, as well as, taking various classes. My project deals with a sense of doubleness and reflection of themes that’s provoking to the mind. The raw emotional aspect of one’s story is most compelling as readers engage through a short set of text, visualizing something they can relate to. Emotion is essentially a form of art that can be twisted or ultimately used in varied ways. As for my project, the reflections of emotion provide a sense of relateability, introspection, and darkened or kindred yearning of a deeper ambition. The originality of my poems forms a collection that captivates the mind, heart, and soul. In the deeper context of things, emotions can sometimes be tricky to deal with. People may be unable to cope with certain struggles as they are forced to deal with the instinctive nature of emotion. As for poetry, the expression of emotion is like a release, a place where people can sit down, process their thoughts, and write about how they’re feeling. Writing is also a form of art that can merge with one’s emotions. A blank page can be turned into one’s own work of art as they have a way to cope with reality. At times, people may find themselves in a fictitious reality, a place where they can escape. The ultimate goal in mind when creating my project is to share some of my thoughts, and emotions, to serve as “reflections.”

My project features a collection of twelve short poems, each being different, but similar in theme. The materials used for my project consist of digitized media and artwork, music, and a hard-covered book with plastic filler pages. The book itself consisted of twenty four pages as my collection of poems and artwork fit the pages perfectly. As for online media, I selected a stock piece of music that fits the overall mood of all the poems. I moreover used an application on my iPad to ultimately format, shape, and design artistic elements and components of the “online” book. My online media uses animated art, music, and is composed into a video.

The overall takeaways for my project is for the reader to get in touch with their emotions, and to reflect on each of the pieces, and how they can relate to them. The various forms of art in poetry or emotion can be expressed, then molded, and ultimately constructed into a bigger work; I see my project as a collection of expresseed memories and feelings that connect to my emotions during different stages of my thinking. It’s important for people to find a constructed reality where they can have a sense of “escape.” Moreover, reflections of emotion and writing can ultimately shape a person to maintain acceptance of their situation, whether through trauma, pain, or a difficult time in life. Evenso, individuals can express reflections at positive times in their lives. The doubleness of opposing emotions and themes, may enable one to find a sense of balance, where one can manage a virtual scale of life.
