Olivia Santos, “Moments in Time”

This project was created to remind us that there was once a time in which physical material was the only way to receive information/current news. The primary source of communication was through writing. I’m envious of the purity and sentimentality that was embedded in this time period, hence why my piece incorporates that of newspaper and journal entries. Taking into consideration how “plugged in” our generation is, i wanted to be authentic in a way that m

The writings in this book are parallel to self reflections that I’ve written in my journal over the years. Although now, journaling is being valued as a way to de-stress and unwind, it’s rare to stay consistent when it comes to logging down thoughts or ideas after a long day. My main goal in choosing these specific journal logs is to show the progression of a teens mind. There are a plethora of mixed emotions throughout puberty and I think it’s important to show an adolescent experiencing life for the first time as they face this difficult stage. I’ve always known that I wanted my diary to be passed down to my children and be used for something important and I’m glad it’s found its first purpose. Additionally, all my notes are handwritten, therefore I think it’s only right that I choose to handwrite my thoughts into the book.

My intent was to keep my book upbeat/authentic while not having a plain black and white theme. I started with plain newspapers (The local Suny Geneseo newspaper to be specific) and after searching the internet the idea to use color seemed like a great idea. Although I didn’t exactly have a direction with what I wanted my project to be about, all I truly cared about was the base. I was purely interested in involving the concept of beauty and how a female’s perception of herself can change over the years, however, this seemed like a superior option.

Over the years I’ve gone through hard times and this diary has helped me to stay on track while keeping in mind that things truly can get better. As time goes on I have even more experiences to add and I hope my children will be able to learn a few lessons based on everything I’ve experienced. Not only does my diary contain writings of inner thought, but memories throughout the years. I frequently go back to reread everything that’s happened and I’m left with a sense of satisfaction. Although we all undergo times of sorrow, it’s important to keep in mind how wonderful this beautiful world is.
